Perhaps what could be described as the first “Oriental” cabinet of curiosities in Paris was developed in the 19th century by an Italian patriot.
Following the fall of the ephemeral Roman Republic, Henri Cernuschi sought refuge in Paris, but soon embarked on a long journey around the world. It was in the Far East that he gradually acquired thousands of artworks and objects, that would form his admirable collection when he would return to France.
Cernuschi died in 1896, leaving his mansion and belongings to the City of Paris. The opening of the Cernuschi Museum followed in 1898.
In 2019, MUEVO participated in the major renovation of the Cernuschi Museum’s permanent collection spaces. The project entailed retrofitting some of the existing display cases, as well as engineering new showcases and display systems, with their accompanying exhibition lighting.
